Be Alert and Keep your Eyes Open
Like anything else in life, try to approach poker with your eyes and ears wide open and your mouth pretty much shut.
No one can win several hands and scoop up several pots without being alert and well aware of what's going on.
Every step of a poker game is a potential crossroad, which means that everything should be treated seriously and taken into account.
Every minute has the potential danger of someone trying to cheat or be misleading, and only an alert player can make sure nothing of the sort will happen.
What might prevent a player from being alert? Drugs and alcohol, for sure.
Also just having a lot on your mind, or having a rough day, or being upset over an argument, or when you're really tied and worn out - any of these are bad starting points for playing a game of poker.
Make sure you open your eyes to see also those who aren't playing at your table but are "hanging around".

Remember Recess
Take a break from time to time. It will keep your mind fresh and you will enter the next game more enthusiastically. Don't be a Bank
Good people help people in trouble. True, but not in every circumstance. If somebody asks you to lend him or her some money, just say no.. With all do respect to any promises made, reality is that most gamblers who lend money from others don't pay back their debts. By giving a loan you will both loose your money and will probably have to stop playing sooner than you expected, because you'll be short of poker chips.
Leave Friendships at the Door Step
Poker tables are different from kitchen tables and from restaurant tables. This isn't the time and place to make new friends. Furthermore, this isn't the time and place to continue investing in existing friendships. Don't agree to be someone's bank, even if he's a good friend. Don't agree to show someone your cards, even if he's your best friends and you "have no secrets". Remember, friendships can only make winning a poker game harder.
Practice Makes Perfect
Be a good poker student (it's much more fun than being a school student, trust us). Don't ever stop learning. Practicing is easier when playing low stakes, because you don't loose so much when making student mistakes.
Play as much as possible, and no doubt your abilities and skills will strengthen .Make sure to play with people your league, for if you go playing with the big boys you might loose a lot of money, a sad event that sometimes discourages people from continuing to play poker.
Give it All You've Got
When playing a game of poker, try to simply give it all that you've got. Forget any past loses, forget your insecurities, try to play with the enthusiasm of a first time player. This will ensure two things: winning some pots - and having a good time. What more does one need?
