Poker FAQ

Is there only one type of poker?
There most certainly isn't! There are so many different types of poker games that it's not easy to keep track of all of them. (And if we the experts say so - you better believe it!) In order to start you off, we want to introduce to you two basic types of poker games: draw poker and stud poker.

In draw poker you can draw new cards from the deck after the initial cards are dealt, your cards are usually dealt face down, and you bet after receiving your initial cards and after you draw new cards. In stud poker games, you play with your initially dealt cards, some cards are face down and some are face up, and you bet after each new face up card is dealt and after the last face down card is dealt.

Both of these types of games can involve either five cards or seven, and can be played in one of two ways: high or high/low. When a poker game is played high, the highest hand wins the pot. When a poker game is played high/low, the pot is split between the person with the highest hand and the person with the lowest hand.

Is poker legal at all, or am I going to get in trouble?
Whether you are going to get in trouble or not is up to you. But, yes, poker is not necessarily illegal, it is simply regulated by gambling laws. In America, where over 63 million people play poker, private poker is not permitted by law anywhere. However, commercialized poker playing, on the other hand, is allowed in several states. Each town may issue licenses to poker clubs for draw poker. The clubs assure that the games are being played fare and square around the tables, which are rent at an hourly rate. Low ball is one of the most popular forms of poker played in these clubs.

Poker is permitted in Nevada, where a Casino Licensing law permits all-out poker playing. Poker is also permitted by law in California, where stud poker is considered a game of chance where as draw or closed poker is considered to be a game of skill. The most famous Californian town is Gardena. This paradise for poker lovers offers seven big poker palaces.

What about competitions and prizes?
Poker today is a kind of sports game, though hardly recognized (perhaps due to the lack of sun and sweat). Poker competitions and poker tournaments take place all around the world, and circulate large sums of money. You can find a tournament to play in practically every single week. The World Series of Poker attracts top poker lovers from all across the world. The different poker competition circulate a lot of money - so start working that sweat!
